Sjögren’s syndrome

Sjögren’s syndrome is an condition which causes inflammation of the gland tissue especially the salivary glands. The disease may occur by itself or with other connective tissue diseases especially rheumatoid disease, systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis.
It has recently been realised that Sjögren’s syndrome is a common condition, affecting up to 3 out of every 100 people in the UK. It is 9 times more common in women and the most common age at diagnosis is around 50. The cause of Sjögren’s syndrome is unknown although there is dysfunction of the immune system.
