Tendonitis (tendinopathy)

Tendonitis (or tendinopathy) is the name used to describe pain affecting tendons. Tendons connect muscle to bone and are essential for movement. Sometimes the pain in tendons can persist and cause long periods of disability.

tendonitis

Tendons commonly affected include the Achilles, the patella (knee) and the rotator cuff (shoulder).

In many patients the symptoms can be induced by doing many repeated tasks, sometimes called ‘overuse tendinopathy’.

In most cases there is no inflammation in the tendon, and the cause of the pain is not known. Treatments for tendonitis include rest, ice, physiotherapy, non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and orthotic devices, such as inserts into footwear.
